Asian Elephant Sculpture 'Songkran 3' Khwan Barton, artist (Thai Language)

This head study is one of several sculptures I made of a 72 year old elephant called Songkran who lives in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. This sculpture is in clay.

Songkran is a female and arrived at Elephant’s World in April 2009 after a hard life of trekking with tourists in Phuket and the Pang-nga province. She arrived thin, totally exhausted, almost unable to stand and couldn’t sleep properly. Now after medical treatment she is able to eat, walk and sleep again. Songkran has no teeth due to her age so has a special diet which includes sticky rice enriched with calcium and nutritional supplements.
